When Is the Best Week of Pregnancy for Maternity Photos

Timing a maternity photo session is one of those decisions that actually matters, and it’s also one that a lot of people figure out a little too late. You don’t want to book too early and miss the belly. You don’t want to wait too long and end up exhausted and uncomfortable for the entire shoot. There’s a window in the third trimester that tends to work well for most pregnancies, but it’s not the same for everyone.

Here’s how to think through the timing for your maternity photo session so you show up feeling good and walk away with photos that are worth keeping.

The Window Most Photographers Recommend

For a single pregnancy, most photographers recommend scheduling maternity photos somewhere between weeks 28 and 36. The spot that tends to work best for a lot of women is around weeks 32 to 34.

At that point, the belly is full and round, which reads well in photos. But most women haven’t yet hit the final weeks of the third trimester, when fatigue and physical discomfort tend to peak. Energy levels are often still manageable. Movement is still fairly comfortable. And the belly is prominent enough that there’s no ambiguity in the images about what you’re celebrating.

Why Not Earlier

Booking before week 28 is possible, but results can vary depending on how you’re carrying. Some women have a clear, prominent bump earlier. Others don’t show as much until later in the third trimester. If you want the belly to be the focal point of the photos, earlier sessions sometimes need more careful posing and wardrobe choices to get the look you’re after.

Why Not Later

Waiting until weeks 37 or 38 isn’t always a problem, but the physical reality of late pregnancy can make a session harder. Swelling in the feet and hands is more common at that stage. Energy is lower. And there’s the practical concern of going into labor unexpectedly close to the date. Most photographers will suggest not pushing past 37 weeks unless your pregnancy is going well and you still feel up to it.

If You’re Carrying Multiples

Twin and other multiple pregnancies tend to show earlier, and the belly grows faster, which means the timing window shifts. For twin pregnancies, many photographers recommend scheduling between weeks 26 and 30. The belly is already prominent, and comfort in the later weeks of a multiple pregnancy is often much lower than in a singleton pregnancy.

If you’re expecting multiples, let your photographer know early. They’ll usually suggest a booking window that accounts for the different growth pattern and the added physical demands.

How You Feel Matters as Much as the Calendar

The week-by-week guidelines are useful starting points, but they don’t override how you actually feel in your body. Some women at 34 weeks are energetic and comfortable. Others are dealing with hip pain, back pressure, or fatigue that makes standing for an hour genuinely difficult.

If you’re dealing with significant discomfort, talk to your photographer before the session about what positions to avoid, how long you’ll be on your feet, and how much movement the session will require. A maternity photo session should not feel like something you have to push through. It should feel manageable, and ideally, it should feel good.

Book during a window when you feel reasonably well. That matters more than hitting a specific number on the calendar.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy or any complications, loop your doctor in before booking. Most maternity sessions are low-key in terms of physical demand, but your care provider should know you’re planning one and can flag anything that might affect timing or location.

Planning Around the Weather in St. Augustine

If you want outdoor maternity photos in St. Augustine, the season factors into the timeline alongside the pregnancy week. Florida summers are hot, and heat in the third trimester is not a comfortable combination. If your timeline puts you at peak bump during July or August, booking early morning or evening sessions cuts down on the heat factor significantly.

Fall and spring in St. Augustine tend to give you the most flexibility with timing and the most comfortable outdoor conditions. Beach sessions and sessions in the historic district both have their own light considerations, and your photographer can advise on what time of day works best for the location you’re drawn to.

Book Earlier Than You Think You Need To

One logistics issue that catches a lot of people off guard: photographers’ schedules fill up. If you want a specific photographer at a specific time, don’t wait until you’re 30 weeks to reach out. By then, their availability for your window might already be limited.

The practice that works best is contacting your photographer around the end of the first trimester or the start of the second. Even if the session won’t happen for months, getting on the calendar early ensures you have the date and time you want. Most photographers can work with you on booking flexibility in case anything changes.

One More Thing to Keep in Mind

A maternity photo session is one of the few times in life when where you are physically is the entire point of the image. The planning around it should reflect that. Pick a week when you feel your best, work with a photographer who communicates clearly about what to expect, and don’t put more weight on the day than it needs to carry. The photos will reflect whatever you walked in with, and if you walked in feeling good, that’s what shows.
